At Soll Eye Associates, Dr. Stephen M. Soll performs Eye Plastic
Surgery. He has been trained to use today’s most sophisticated
techniques and is a fellow of the American Society of Ophthalmic
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Fellowship in ASOPRS indicates
that the surgeon has special training and expertise in this subspeciality,
and that he or she is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology
or its equivalent.
The eyelids and mid-facial area are the parts of the face that first
attract the attention. With age, many people develop bags under their
eyelids, or the skin of the upper eyelids droops enough to give them
a tired look or even to block some of their vision. Cosmetic eye
plastic surgery is an excellent method for correcting these problems.
People also develop growth of the eyelids and tissues around the
eyes, as well as behind the eyes. In many cases, these tumors must
be removed surgically, and the surgeon must have the ability to reconstruct
the area of the face where the diseased tissue has been

Skin Cancers
Skin cancers, most commonly caused by excessive exposure to sunlight,
often involves the skin of the eyelid or adjacent face. The most
common forms of skin cancer, both relatively slow growing, are
basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. With early detection
and proper treatment, there is a good chance of removing the tumor
completely. These types of skin cancer do not usually metastasize
to other parts of the body. More serious types of skin cancer are
sebaceous gland carcinoma and malignant melanoma, which may metastasize;
therefore, these types of skin cancer require prompt, aggressive
treatment because of the threat of early spread. After treatment,
regular follow-up visits with a physician are necessary to be sure
that the skin cancer does not recur.
Surgery of The Eyelids, Lacrimal System and Orbit
Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is a specialized area
of ophthalmology that deals with the management of deformities and
abnormalities of the eyelids, the lacrimal system, the orbit and
the adjacent face. In the case of the eyelid, these surgeons deal
with such procedures as reconstructive surgery for eyelid abnormality
or skin cancer removal or cosmetic surgery to improve appearance.
They may also repair baggy eyelids, drooping brows, droopy eyelids
or scars. Other surgeries may be performed to correct conditions
caused by thyroid disease, eyelids that open too widely, or those
that turn outward or inward.
The lacrimal system consists of a gland under the eyelid that makes
tears and keeps the eye healthy and moist. Conditions of the lacrimal
gland that cause the eye to be too dry or too wet can be corrected
by surgery.
Numerous medical and surgical problems can affect the orbit, the
bony structure that surround the eye. Anything that causes swelling
and enlargement of the orbital structures bhind the eye can push
the eye forward and may restrict its movement, preventing the eye
from moving properly and causing double vision. Orbital surgery can
repair thyroid eye disease, orbital tumors and orbital injuries and
fractures
